Background

Granthor Ardevain comes from a long line of Elven wizards. As such, he was expected to follow in his parent's footsteps. He received training in magic theory and practice just like every other apprentice; however, things started to go awry when the lessons moved onto spell casting. Unlike his fellow apprentices, Granthor had an intuitive sense about how to tap into the magic. Magic spells were not something that required memorizing detailed procedures when you could feel and sense the magic flowing around you.

Granthor's parents had a sense of what might be going on, so they immediately took Granthor out of the apprentice program and began tutoring him privately. However, no amount of private tutoring could change how Granthor did magic. The more tutoring he receive - the more convinced he became that wizardry while powerful was a complete misunderstanding of the true nature of magic.

Granthor's parents forbid him to do magic because sorcery was considering an dangerous abomination by the Ardevain's order of wizardry. Sorcerers were killed or chased away. For a time, Granthor worked on mundane jobs for the order, but he secretly continued his magical studies learning to understand the magic and tap into spells. He became more withdrawn and secretive, and he sound out the dark, unused portions of the order's buildings to carry on his work.

This went on a couple of years before the inevitable finally occurred. Granthor was tapping into the magic to create a force projectile, and he accidentally destroyed one of the order's stain glass windows. This act was observed by one of the elves he used to be an apprentice with, a female elf named Cordelion Evergreen. Granthor had a crush on Cordelion during their apprenticeship, and from time to time, he wondered if his feelings were reciprocated. Cordelion saw the spell and figured out that Granthor must be a dangerous sorcerer, so she ran to inform the order's leadership (this is how Granthor interpreted her actions).

Granthor grabbed the few belongings he had and or could find. He knew that he wouldn't have a chance if he just tried to run, so he headed to the order's portal room. As luck would have it, one of the portals was activated, and Granthor stepped through teleporting him to an unknown area.

Granthor found himself in a cosmopolitan city ruled by thieves where he needed to keep his true abilities hidden. He's not accustomed to living with non-elves, but he's been here long enough to get over the worst of that.With no family or roots in the community, Granthor does odd jobs to make ends meet, and he longs for the opportunity to shape the world into a place where he can thrive.
