Background

Tengu's father, Tarou Jun, was a moon elven snake oil sales-man and his mother, Jia Dart, was a moon elven tielfing dancer with the mastery of disguise.

Each of them joined a traveling circus of performers separately. The caravan was a family of outcasts from their own society, because they didn't look 'normal' or act it. The fact that this caravan was so inviting, was because they were a mixture of races co-existing as a society themselves. Humans, elves, dwarfs, and so on made them a strange sight.

Jia came to see the caravan as her home after they picked her up on the side of the road, knowing what she was and what she was capable of. Later, Tarou joined the caravan when it camped near his home.

They both met and fell in love not long after Tarou joined the caravan. Tarou and Jia were married not long after. A year later, they had Tengu. Tengu grew up within the caravan and, like many children who grow up with performers, did not know the prejudice of the outside world. He did not know that within him was blood people would revile him for. He did not realize how society would treat him as the lowest of the low. He knew of the battle within him though, and feared whatever the outcome would eventually be. It was only at the age of 16, when the caravan was destroyed, that he came to understand what a trial life would be for him and the small band of mixed raced children as they looked for a place to live and be accepted.

Tengu and a group of young (now orphaned) children are all that is left of the caravan, survivors from the massacre at the hands of Prince Stolas. The reason for the 'survival' of these children, was because they managed to flee into the wilderness. Prince Stolas chose to let them flee, knowing that they would soon die from hunger and the elements. It is unknown why Stolas singled out a miserable band of performers with his bandits. Some speculate that the caravan was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Tengu missed the attack upon the caravan only by luck. The routine of the caravan was to camp at a place for a ride at a time (unless chased off by authorities when near establishments), to recoup from traveling, and to gather supplies before moving on. A day before the caravan broke camp, the young men of the band would draw lots to see who scouted a new place to set up. Those scouting ahead would ride a day's journey, looking for a good source of food and water for all. They would then ride back to camp and the elders of the caravan would choose which direction to travel.

Four youths set out in four directions, but Tengu was the last of them to return and find the skeletal remains of the caravan wagons and the crying children hidden in the wilderness. Salvaging what he could off the wagons, Tengu was able to make a working cart to carry the children. What unspoiled food was left had to be rationed sparingly, because Tengu didn't know how long it would take to find a place to house the young ones. The first village they tried to approach to beg for food chased them out, due to Tengu's appearance. Through trial and error, at the expense of what little provisions they had, Tengu was able to hide his features well enough to pass as human enough to get something for the children. Many times, he would have to leave them outside the village as he scavenged within. Some villages that they passed through tolerated him enough to at least give a little food that was going to rot anyway and maybe a broken down shed for shelter.

Eventually they came to the city of Telflamm. Sick from the last batch of 'generous' food given to him, of which Tengu had eaten worst of so that the children would get the healthiest food, Tengu collapsed upon the stairs of a monastery. At first the monks of the monastery left the weakened Tengu to die there, but the head monk, Brother Nikolee, felt that all creatures deserved pity. Nikolee told Tengu that he must vacate the streets before dark if he wished to see the next light of day. At first Tengu took this as a threat upon his life by the monks, but Nikolee told him that when the dark comes it brings shadow beasts that prey upon those foolish enough to venture in the dark. With what strength he had left, Tengu bowed before Nikolee and begged him to retrieve the children he had left outside the city. To give them shelter for the night and he would repay them how he could. Nikolee agreed to take the children for the night and sent forth monks to fetch them.

The children were brought into the sanctum of the monastery, where they were given food and drink; Tengu was forced to find his own shelter for the night. Unknown to Tengu, Nikolee sent forth an ex-monk by the name of Ji Gong to help him. Ji Gong, who does not look like a monk, took Tengu to an abandoned bar within the more deserted parts of Telflamm and nursed him back to health. Through secret messages from Nikolee to Ji Gong, Tengu learned that the children were placed in an orphanage that the head monk managed to get in touch with. However the orphanage had little funding as it was and the extra mouths to feed would soon mean it would need to close. In repayment for taking in the children, Tengu vowed to make enough money to keep the orphanage running as long as the children within could not fend for themselves. Having no skills to earn money, Tengu was at a lost at what he could do to make the money. Once again, Ji Gong stepped up to offer his teachings as a monk. Tengu realized that Nikolee could not take training Tengu on, and thus had sent Ji Gong in his place.

In one of his training session, Ji Gong tried to get Tengu in touch with his infernal side. The attempt was to learn what this side of Tengu wanted of him so that he could fight it as much as possible. In his spiritual journey, Tengu found that he was a distant relation of Asakku The Righteous. Tengu discovered that he could speak with Asakku and gain infernal knowledge.

During his training, Tengue took it upon himself to learn the city. He felt the best way to make money, was to be a bodyguard to the wealthy or powerful. The better he could protect, the more money he would make. But rubbing elbows (so to speak) would get him into trouble he didn't foresee. When he was ready for his first bodyguard job, Tengu was invited by his employer to share a rare bottle of aged wine. Tengu immediately took to the taste and feel the wine gave him. In the beginning, Tengu only drank when he was off duty, or at least tried to. One day, while waiting for a job, he found himself challenged to a drinking contest. Tengu rose up to the challenge and won, but was jumped by the loser and company. At first his opponents had the upper hand in the fight, because Tengu was unsteady on his feet, but something happen that encouraged Tengu to keep fighting. Tengu found that every hit he took felt dull or nothing at all, he was numb to the pain from the alcohol. And when he found how good he was at improvisation, he found it easier to out manuver his attackers. However, he barely won the fight and nearly got his himself killed.

Liking the power drinking gave him in fighting, but worried the might endanger others with how reckless he was. Tengu decided he would find a master of drunken fight to help him hone his skills.
